Christmas 2013

Well, I think we’re finally recovered from our Christmas season – our wonderful, crazy, Christmas season 🙂 It was full of family and laughter and lots and lots of love. Not to mention it was Ellie’s first Christmas too! (I love these photos we managed to get of her and her friend just before we left for NY)

We started in Western NY visiting my family – we had many parties to attend and lots of family to see. (And another photo session) We celebrated our own Christmas on Sunday, December 15 with my brothers, nephews, their mom, and my parents. And we managed to wrangle everyone together for a family photo 🙂 And got some of Ellie with her oldest uncle – I love these!

There was also a larger family party while we were there – and Santa even visited (as he does every year!).

We thankfully had about a week to recover when we got home – especially since David and I both got the stomach flu . . . yuck! All of David’s siblings and their families arrived on December 24 – and we had conspired with them to do some family sessions as a present for his mom for Christmas. So, we met each family individually on Christmas Eve (one couple Christmas morning!) and were able to show a slideshow for his mom as we opened presents. Here’s the images she chose to put on her wall

We had Ellie dedicated while everyone was in town and that’s when we were able to get a shot of the whole family – including grandma and grandpa.

What a fantastic few weeks – we love our families and wish everyone lived close to us so we could see them all way more often! How was your Christmas this year?

Hoffman Family Farm

If you remember, we donated a family mini photo session for a benefit in honor of my cousin back in November. The lucky winner really wanted photos of her son and grandson. So, just before Christmas while we were in Canaseraga visiting my side of the family, we were able to meet them at the family farm. What a beautiful place! I asked to move it – and I wasn’t kidding 🙂

It was a wonderful snowy day – almost too snowy as they live on a hill and we don’t have 4 wheel drive in our Yaris 😉 We managed to make it up the hill and started in the house. Mom (grandma) is an artist (or at least was in high school when she painted the trees on the wall in the this photo) – I also volunteered to take that off their hands if they ever need to get rid of it (I found all sort of things I fell in love with there!) Isn’t it amazing?!

After our beginning inside, we managed to talk them into venturing out into the snow and I’m glad we did. We had a blast (I hope they did too)!

Byler Family Mini Session – West Boylston, MA

We love spending time with the Byler family. And that’s just what we got to do once again on a lovely Saturday recently at the Old Stone Church in West Boylston, Massachusetts. We’ve been here before, and we’ll probably be back — this is a favorite location of ours.  The church is beautiful and so are the rest of the grounds.  We love watching their boys grow and change each year – they are so darn cute! Last year we went to them; this year they decided to come to us.

We caught the peak of fall foliage . . . as did many other photographers. We were just one of at least four photo sessions happening that morning at this location. We’re so glad we have such fun, cute, and flexible clients 🙂
If you’ve never been a part of one of our sessions, we love to vary the speed. We will often start by walking around a bit to help the kids (and parents) get used to us and the camera and loosen up a little bit. Throughout the session we also stop at various locations for some posed shots, but we love to capture the in-between. Kids love to run and play, obviously, so we try to get some of those shots as well. Mom and dad came prepared this year with gummy bears as incentive for the boys to cooperate and smile for the camera. It worked great. And don’t forget monkey, you’ll see him in several of the pictures if you look for him.

Thank you Bylers!  We’re so thankful for you and for spreading the word about us!

Baby Ryckie Benefit – Canaseraga NY

Rhiannon’s cousin Amy passed away early last year from pancreatic cancer. She was diagnosed the spring before – it moved so fast! To make it extra devastating, her partner had their first baby girl less than two weeks prior to her passing.

I had the privilege of working with Amy last year (the year she got sick) at Lincoln-Sudbury High School. It is a true testament of how good she was at her job to see how much her students and coworkers loved her!

Baby Ryckie (who’s first name is actually Amy – after her mother) is a beautiful, smart, fun girl, just like Amy and Lindsey. As a memorial to Amy, her family decided to host a benefit and give all the proceeds to baby Ryckie. It will be held in Canaseraga where we grew up – at the American Legion, on November 10. If you’re close by, be sure to stop in!

And, if you do go, you can have a chance to win a mini session from us! We’re donating a 30 minute family session to be held on December 14 at 9am – we’ll be in NY that weekend to celebrate Christmas with my side of the family. Be sure to have fun at the benefit for us – we can’t make it 🙁

Family Mini Sessions – Westborough, MA

We recently participated in a fundraiser for our church’s youth group to help raise money for a mission trip they will be taking this summer. They’re headed to Ensenada, Mexico to help at a YWAM base for the second year in a row. We offered mini sessions to families and donated money to the trip.

We had two families take us up on this deal – the Ryan family and the Fraher family – both were awesome, but very different families!

The Ryan family has older kids – middle school and high school age. It was so fun to watch their interactions together and hear some about their lives. They just moved to MA in the last year from the west coast. They are a silly bunch, that’s for sure – we laughed a lot with these folks.

The Fraher family has 2 young girls – both super-cute! Rhiannon again did a lot of silly things to get them looking at the camera as David shot that day. We’re convinced the key to working with young kids in a photo shoot is to keep things moving quickly so they don’t get too bored. Another good trick is to let them pick a pose, then you pick a pose, etc.

Mom and dad were great sports too in this shoot – willing to do anything to get the girls into it. They did silly walks, funny faces, and asked silly questions too. Again, we really enjoyed laughing and playing with the Fraher family!

Peirce Family – Lexington, MA

It’s getting closer to Christmas and families are still getting in to have photos taken for their cards! One of these is the Peirce family. Actually, it’s just the kids and grandkids – mom and dad chose not to join us since they wanted to just show off their amazing kids and cuties this year!

The day was cold  with lots of wind, but thankfully sunny. All of these guys were such troopers, especially the kids who were both recovering from colds! We spent our time at Minute Man National Historic Park in Lexington, MA and we worked fast to try to keep warm!

The oldest in the family is married with her own family, so we spent some time capturing just them – as well as just the kiddos.

We were sure to get all of the adult kids together.

And some of the whole family.

Don’t forget individual photos for mom either.

We had a great time in a beautiful place and hope to see these folks again soon! Merry Christmas to all!

D Family – Hopkinton, MA

The D family contacted us recently to have photos taken – partly for their Christmas cards, and of course, to have the memories captured in time.

D_Family-4.jpgD_Family-5.jpg
We decided to meet at Hopkinton State Park in Hopkinton, MA. Having never been there, we went a day or two earlier and found some lovely locations we hoped to use on the day of the shoot.

D_Family-1.jpgD_Family-10.jpgD_Family-11.jpgD_Family-12.jpgD_Family-13.jpgD_Family-14.jpgD_Family-15.jpgD_Family-16.jpgD_Family-2.jpgD_Family-3.jpgD_Family-6.jpgD_Family-7.jpgD_Family-8.jpgD_Family-9.jpg
The day we met them, it was a beautiful sunny day – too sunny! Capturing photos is always easier on a cloudy day, it helps to eliminate harsh shadows and gives a much more even lighting. We worked with what we were given though – and had fun in the process.

It took a bit to get the kids to act natural in front of the camera. We had to use great teamwork this day – David focused (no pun intended) on the camera and Rhiannon did great occupying the kids – she had them throw leaves since they wanted to play with them anyway – and boy did it pay off – look at those smiles!

As the parents loosened up, dad really go into it too and started throwing out some great suggestions for poses and shots. Maybe he should consider a career switch??

We such a fun time with this sweet family – we hope they did too!

Swenson Family – OC, CA

We went on vacation recently to Orange County, CA to visit David’s sister, her husband, and their 3 children. We were fortunate to be able to spend 10 fun-filled days with them – and just before sunset on one of those days, we were privileged to be able to shoot some family photos for them.

As anyone who has ever tried to take photos of small children knows, it’s nearly impossible to get them all looking at the camera at the same time. We had several tricks up our sleeves that we tried that day. From telling them there’s a fun bug in the camera lens and asking if they can see it too, to being completely ridiculous.

Rhiannon got a great workout this day as David was shooting – she stayed directly behind him and danced like a fool and made silly faces. David pretended not to know she was doing anything and would glance back every now and again and she would stop immediately. This of course brought great delight to the two oldest especially. They giggled and giggled and tried to tell him what Aunt Rhiannon was doing, but he never caught her. It worked like a charm – at least on these two oldest – the youngest apparently thought she was completely crazy, but was definitely looking in the direction of the camera nonetheless. Mom and dad may have been a bit embarrassed to be seen with us 🙂 Ahh, the things we do for our craft!

The adults and kids alike did great – especially since this particular park we were at is one where they often visit to play on the play structure! I believe the words from the oldest as we were walking back toward the van and he veered off toward the play structure were: “but we didn’t come here to take pictures, we came here to play!”
